$7 million for "The New Mutants"
It got horrible reviews, but "The New Mutants" still racked up $7 million over the weekend. "Unhinged" added enough to bring its cume to almost $9 million. And "The Personal History of David Copperfield," which would only have been art-house fodder in the best of times, was good enough for a half-mil.
Not terrible, considering, and would seem to indicate an appetite among hardcore moviegoers to return to theaters. But after "Tenet" opens this week, we have no major -- or even semi-major -- films on the theatrical docket until October.
That's terrible timing, but the feature film production/distribution model is like a WWII battleship that makes really slow turns. Most studios are playing it safe and waiting for 2021 with their biggies, but will there even be a theatrical infrastructure to come back to by then?
"Mulan" is debuting at a premium on Disney+ and if it does VOD numbers similar to "Trolls World Tour," I would not be surprised if the House of Mouse leaves the exhibition model entirely except for a few major releases, say two to three a year.
