A "Truman Show"
The Film Yap Lexicon is comprised of terminology for certain cinematic phenomena that occur often enough to form discernible patterns — typically events or circumstances that are patently ludicrous to customs of narrative or known science and, on occasion, the result of misguided choices by filmmakers. Although these terms could take their name from numerous films, they are principally derived from the prime examples of this phenomena.
A "Truman Show"
The film where an actor noted for one particular genre, often comedy, takes a dramatically different type of role, usually for the purpose of extending their acting skills, becoming a more "serious" actor, or chasing awards. Named for Jim Carrey's performance in "The Truman Show," a film that took a step away from Carrey's typical genre of comedy in order to showcase his talents as a serious dramatic actor. Carrey himself has mixed in several more "Truman Show"s into his filmography with films like "The Majestic," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "The Number 23."
For example, "Stranger Than Fiction" was Will Ferrell's "Truman Show."
