Actor Bob Hoskins dies at 71

Actor Bob Hoskins, perhaps best known as the gruff detective Eddie Valiant in 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" has died at age 71, the Associated Press reports.

A statement released by Hoskins' agent states he died in a hospital after a fight with pneumonia. Hoskins announced in 2012 that he suffered from Parkinson's Disease and was retiring from acting.

A diverse veteran of many genres, Hoskins was best known for his role as Valiant, the private eye who helps uncover a plot to destroy Hollywood's Toontown, where all of the animated characters in Hollywood live, in "Roger Rabbit," a huge hit that was famous at the time for not only mixing genres (live-action and animation), but also characters (Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse and many of their respective "colleagues" appeared in the film together for the first time).

Hoskins also appeared in "Brazil," "Hook," "Enemy at the Gates," "Super Mario Bros." and "Nixon." His last role was in 2012's "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Hoskins leaves behind a wife and three children.
