Bygone Behemoth
This clever animated short is about a killer monster from the sea who's been pushed into an early retirement he didn't want. Now he lays about his house, contemplating his heyday while waiting for the phone to call with his agent announcing some new work.
Think Godzilla in his declining years.
"This is no business for old dinosaurs like us anymore," the agent observes, after announcing the news that the studio is "going in a different direction."
This isn't the most original concept in the world -- Roger Rabbit tapped the idea of cinematic critters being real, sentient beings 20 years ago -- but I enjoyed the notion nonetheless.
Writer/director Harry Haskin blends black-and-white nostalgia with wry humor as he pans and fades through the Behemoth's apartment, looking over news clippings from his glory years at the top of his box office.
I especially liked the shot of the monster in his bath, contemplating his own tail as it sticks out of the tub.
There isn't much narrative to speak of in the 6-minute short, but the idea is strong enough to stand on its own.
