CODA wins big at SAG Awards
The tiny drama about a deaf family took top honors along with supporting actor Troy Kotsur; Will Smith and Jessica Chastain win in leading categories.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced last night, with the little drama “CODA” coming out as the big winner, taking honors for Best Cast and Best Supporting Actor Troy Kotsur. This puts him in line as the frontrunner for the Critics Choice (of which I’m a voting member) and the Academy Awards, announced March 13 and 27, respectively.
If he’s triumphant, Kotsur would become the second deaf actor to win an Oscar, joining his “CODA” co-star Marlee Matlin, who won 35 years ago. (And still looks the same age, damn her.)
Will Smith won Best Actor for “King Richard” and Jessica Chastain took Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Ariana DeBose of “West Side Story” took Supporting Actress. All should now also be considered favorites for the Oscar.
(SAG uses the term “Outstanding Performance” rather than “Best,” but c’mon…)
The SAGs are important because actors make up the largest voting bloc for the Academy Awards, so the winners here track with the Oscar winners about 75% of the time.
The only one that came as a bit of a surprise was Chastain, because “Eyes” did not do particularly well commercially or critically. She’s terrific in it, though. I’d say Olivia Colman is her main competition for “The Lost Daughter,” though voters might favor someone who hasn’t won the Oscar before despite three nominations.
By that same token, this would seem to be Will Smith’s year, having been nominated three times (and a fourth as a producer). Plus, I have to say, the lead actor category is rather weak this year.
