Curb Your Enthusiasm: Season 8
For decades, Larry David has said what everyone is thinking.
Since the premiere of the comedy writer's crowning achievement, "Seinfeld," he has become one of the finest vehicles for our frustrations, commenting on both timely and timeless, universal and particular irritations in a hilariously irreverent yet sympathetic manner.
HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is an exaggerated look at the man at work, exploring the kind of social boundaries in his personal life and those around him that inform his writing. David's role as a professional and pro bono mindspeaker is literalized in the latest season when he is enlisted as a "social assassin."
Whether he is persuading a friend's wife to stop speaking in Internet lingo or trying to expose Michael J. Fox as a phony, all of Larry's social battles now feel more like missions than mishaps.
In the end, unlike previous seasons, this one evokes more affectionate head-shaking than seat-squirming. Most noticeably absent is the tension waiting for David at home and by his side — his wife Cheryl (Cheryl Hines).
Boosted by last season's "Seinfeld" reunion, this season entertains, but never quite matches that warm reminder of the magic that fuels "Curb." Fortunately, the cast reminds us in the DVD's enchanting and insightful roundtable discussion at New York's 92nd Street Y.
This season is certainly worth adding to your collection. But it's like an old pair of shoes — comfortable and familiar rather than refreshing.
