Film on Vinyl: The Blob
It’s time for another installment of one of the best columns discussing soundtracks on vinyl, Film on Vinyl. Many people hate remakes of classic movies. More often than not, the remake isn’t being made as love letter to the original, but as a money grab. This week on Film on Vinyl we’ll be taking a closer look at One Way Static’s release of Chuck Russel’s remake of The Blob.
Throughout the many years that moving pictures have entertained the masses, there have been a plethora of movie monsters that have terrified us: vampires, werewolves, zombies, and gargoyles. Even a plucky leprechaun has made himself a mainstay in the horror world. But nothing has been as oddly terrifying as a gelatinous alien that eats everything in its path.
The blob first terrorized teens back in 1958 and again, thirty years later in Chuck Russel’s remake. This alien terror was a brand new level of terror, and to fully capture the bizarre nature of the creature, took the masterful stroke of Emmy award nominee, Michael Hoenig. Hoenig had already lent his talents to the cult classic The Gate and The Blob was a perfect encore.
Packaging:
Unfortunately this release is only a single sleeve, but It gives fans more than expected. The brains behind One Way Static utilized the film’s poster art for the cover and it does pay off. The way that the blob engulfs the entire front and back of the sleeve is a great representation of the beast itself. And you can’t help but love seeing one of the blob’s many victims pressed against the front. The liner note wrapped on the side is also a nice touch.
With a movie like the Blob, one would have hoped for something a little more substance, but this package is still able to deliver the goods.
Tracks:
Michael Hoenig’s synth-driven score is as unique as the monster it represents. With such a solid score it’s really hard to pick a few of the star tracks. But I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t give it a whirl. It Fell from the Sky is an obvious choice because it perfectly sets the mood for the film. In the Hospital and Blob in the Theatre do a masterful job of keeping the pace up and adding suspense to the story. While these are all star tracks, nothing comes close to the Blob on Mainstreet. Viewers are finally given the view of the insatiable monster and it’s absolute fury.
Thoughts in a Nutshell:
One Way Static has delivered another great piece. A true fan of horror may have wanted a little bit more, but you can’t win them all. The Blob is a must-own for all monster movie fans. It absolutely oozes with B-movie goodness. If you don’t already own this release, then it would be a good idea to rectify that mistake. Just be sure to temper your expectations.
Until next time, make sure that you’re always using the appropriate cartridge. Remember to always spin responsibly.
