Hector Corp
“Hector Corp” places a finger firmly on the pulse of modern America — and captures all its financial fears. It does so completely through oddball comedy.
This short film follows corporate drone, Victor Gray (Roger Horn) as he begins work at Hector Corporation — an ominous office building enveloped in shadows.
“Hector Corp” is visually arresting. Filmed through a nostalgic haze, the film recalls “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” and 1940s Superman cartoon serials.
More importantly, the film recalls our economic woes. Employees of the corporation are getting laid off by the dozen and things get strange when they are given stress-relief penguin toys. It turns out that the penguins are company assassins — a manifestation of the employees’ professional fears. Victor engages in a hilarious battle with his penguin, which evokes the slapstick comedy of “Wallace & Gromit” cartoons.
The film’s dazzling visuals were created during a three-and-a-half year post-production phase. Therefore, director Gary Lee couldn’t have possibly predicted the way the film would reflect our current business climate, making it even more magical.
