Everyone has had a job they loved turned into a living hell because their boss was a complete and total (insert expletive here). You sit at your desk and imagine the ceiling caving in on top of your boss or he/she is standing by the twentieth story window and a desk chair just happens to roll into them and send them falling out the window to their extremely painful death. Director Seth Gordon shows everyone how much better life would be if we made our day dreams a reality in “Horrible Bosses.”
The story centers on three friends from high school – Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) - who love their jobs but hate their egotistical, man-eating, drug abusing bosses. After years of being used and abused, the trio decides to make their lives better by ending their respective boss’. Unfortunately, even the best laid plans can go awry.
“Horrible Bosses” is a hilarious romp into everyone’s dream and it is thanks to Bateman, Day and Sudeikis as three friends fed up with the way their bosses treat them. These three actors help bring a realism to their characters.
Bateman is a lot of fun to watch because he is actually given a different role than usual. He still plays a bit of a work¬-a-holic, but he has finally been allowed to remove the stick from his derriere and loosen up a little bit. He isn’t quite as wild as his turn in “The Change-Up” but he is given a bit more liberties for sure. Sudeikis is quite hilarious as the sexed crazed member of the group. He is so non-chalant about agreeing to kill his boss that it is hilarious on its own. Bateman and Sudeikis’s comedic timing is perfect between the two of them. Day plays, well, Charlie Day. His character isn’t much different from “Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia” but it definitely works more often than not. It is also impossible to say which boss was the worst because Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Anniston and Colin Ferrell were so good that I couldn’t help but want each and every one of them dead. Well, maybe not Anniston.
I think one of the main reasons that this movie works is because the plot is simple and is something that is relatable to everyone. All of us have had a boss that we absolutely hated more than anything else. The fact that these three guys so easily agree to commit murder but have no idea what they are doing is hilarious. These three are so clueless on how to kill anyone that they consult their OnStar representative on where to find 'low-lives' to consult on how to murder someone. The movie never takes itself too seriously and that's where it really hits it home.
If these aren’t enough reasons to buy “Horrible Bosses” on blu ray then maybe the plethora of extras will help solidify your decision. The blu ray release includes the featurettes: My Least Favorite Career, Surviving A Horrible Boss and Being Mean is So Much Fun. There are also some hilarious deleted scenes and two versions of the movie. “Horrible Bosses” isn’t the funniest movie ever but it is a great time and will leave you with a smile on your face in the end.
