Movies You Aught Not Watch: Marci X
Movies You Aught Not Watch is a weekly, alphabetical look back at the 52 worst films of 2000-2009.
"Marci X" Rated R 2003
For greatness in the rap-satire genre, rent “Fear of a Black Hat.” If mediocrity’s more your style, try “CB4.” But if mind-numbingly awful genre jabs that feel as fresh as the mere idea of reality programming are your thing, by all means, disregard your mental well-being and watch 2003’s “Marci X” — as irreverent as a “South Park” episode but nowhere near as intelligent or subversive.
Damon Wayans plays Dr. S, a gangster rapper with an unruly Afro and songs like “The Power in My Pants” and “Shoot Your Teacher.” The duties of reining in Dr. S fall on Marci (Lisa Kudrow), a stereotypical Jewish princess trying to prove herself to her record label-owning father.
Wayans wanders around with a bewildered stare and a faux-Mike Tyson squeak. No better is Kudrow, who must have had an ongoing bet with Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for who could make the worst movies. (It’s a draw.)
Using word “chemistry” to describe what romantically occurs between Kudrow and Wayans in a misguided development insults the science. Their smooches are neither passionate nor particularly sensible given prior plot points, just weird.
The wry wit that screenwriter Paul Rudnick brought to two “Addams Family” films and “In & Out” occasionally surfaces, and songwriter Marc Shaiman drops a humorous boy-band abstinence anthem. But it’s no wonder this drew flies as a rancid finished product on Paramount’s shelves for more than two years.
