Odd Trilogies - The 'Odd Nutcracker' trilogy
In case you haven't heard, Yappers Logan Sowash and Andy Carr have started a film-related podcast!
For the last few months, Logan and Andy have been discussing movies in clusters of three for their podcast Odd Trilogies. Whether connected by title, story, themes, cast, crew, or something more tenuous, these "trilogies" are selected and/or curated by Logan and Andy based on their strange similarities and commonalities.
After a long hiatus, the boys returned last week, just in time for an Odd Trilogy perfect for the holiday season, diving into three massively different versions of the classic Nutcracker story: 2001's Barbie in the Nutcracker, 2010's The Nutcracker in 3D, and 2018's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Logan and Andy discover the crazy differences between the three of them, and they have an epic struggle to remember the term "public domain." All that and more awaits you in this festive return to ODD TRILOGIES!

More about Odd Trilogies
In August, the podcast kicked off with three episodes on the Bill & Ted trilogy, one episode per film—just in time for the release of Bill & Ted Face the Music. This one, of course, is an official, deliberate trilogy on the part of the filmmakers (not always the case, on this podcast). Check out those episodes for yourself at the links below, or find them on Spotify, Apple, and Google Podcasts!
Episode 1: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Episode 2: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Episode 3: Bill & Ted Face the Music
We followed that up with a deep dive into the origins of polarizing director Zack Snyder with our "Rise of Snyder" trilogy. Before he was known as the maestro of the DC Comics film franchise, Snyder made a name for himself directing adaptations of other popular properties: George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead, Frank Miller's 300, and Alan Moore's Watchmen. Amazingly enough, as far as Logan and Andy are concerned, Snyder might have actually been a better filmmaker before he took over the reins of DC. Check out their very mixed thoughts on Snyder's prior work. This trilogy also features the show's first "Freakquel" bonus episode—a look at Snyder's only animated film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.
Episode 4: Dawn of the Dead
Episode 5: 300
Episode 6: Watchmen
Freakquel #1: Legend of the Guardians
Then came October, and we knew we had to do something for spooky season. We opted for the great Italian filmmaker Dario Argento, and his cult classic Three Mothers trilogy! Many know of his classic, 1977's Suspiria, but few know that it was the first in a decades-spanning trilogy of horror films from the renowned director. Argento followed up with 1980's Inferno, and 2007's Mother of Tears. Neither even remotely reaches the psychedelic heights of the original, but it's a fascinating (even if not good) cinematic journey nonetheless. We topped it all off with a Halloween Freakquel special, Luca Guadagnino's acclaimed 2018 remake of Suspiria!
Episode 7: Suspiria
Episode 8: Inferno
Episode 9: Mother of Tears
Freakquel #2: Suspiria (2018)
And then came a time for change. After taking in some feedback from our audience, Odd Trilogies opted to test-drive a new format: an entire trilogy in one episode. What better to take this new style for a spin than Pixar's Cars trilogy? We know it's nobody's favorite Pixar property, but hey, it's got its own sort of underdog charm. Except for Cars 2. Cars 2 has nothing. We will not speak of Cars 2 (beyond this episode, of course). It's one of our most raucous episodes yet, and strangely enough, we found that the Cars franchise has made for a decent barometer for the state of Pixar overall at the time of each entry!
Episode 10, Trilogy 4: The Cars Trilogy
Our Odd Nutcracker trilogy continues with this 3-in-1 format, as does next week's episode: The Santa Clause Trilogy. Join us for some Christmas cheer before the big day as Logan and Andy sink deep into the melancholy of divorce with Tim Allen's iconic holiday franchise. Seriously, it's kinda weird how grim the first film is in its depiction of blended family dynamics. Anyway. The Santa Clause episode launches Saturday, 12/19!
