Oscars liveblog 2016
It's time to get started!
Chris: (12:07): Looks like I got 14//24 Oscar predictions right. About par for me. I think Stallone and Sam Smith screwed up a lot of #Oscars pools. Thanks to everyone who tuned in!
Chris: (11:59): Does "Spotlight" set a new record for least total number of wins by a Best Picture???
Chris: (11:56): Leonardo is literally Hollywood's golden boy. Looks like he was forged from burnished bronze. His #Oscars award is a little him.
Chris: (11:48): You'd have to have seen "Room" to know why the music they're playing to walk Brie Larson up is so apropos. So happy!
Chris: (11:40): Honestly, whoever chose "Ride of the Valkyries" for the walk-off music at the #Oscars should be taken out in the street and shot. Or noogied
Chris: (11:38): Inarritu wins Best Director. Blarg. Just Blarg. Expected but... blarg.
Chris: (11:31): Uh, plunging necklines are really... plunging at this year's
Chris: (11:28): Glrrrkk! One of the worst Bond songs ever wins an Oscar. Wow. Don't think anyone saw this coming.
Chris: (11:26): So how exactly do the #Oscars justify not performing two of the five nominees? Aren't they just openly acknowledging they have no chance?
Chris: (11:22): Glad for Ennio. Hardly his best score, but easily the best one in this field.
Chris: (11:17): Even that powerful staging of Gaga's song doesn't belie the fact that "The Hunting Ground" is an egregious piece of distortion.
Chris: (11:05): Ugh... "Stutterer" was well-acted but easily the most conventional of the live short nominees.
Chris: (11:04): Jacob and Abraham together is like: "Yeah, we're young and you never heard of us. But don't you think we deserved a nod?"
Chris: (10:59): Not a popular opinion possibly, but I really object to the inclusion of film critics/journalists in the Dead People We Love segment.
Chris: (10:57): Love that Christopher Lee's In Memorium clip was from "The Man with the Golden Gun," probably my favorite Bond film.
Chris: (10:46): You can judge the extent of someone's film geekdom by how cheesed off they get by the documentary feature & short awards.
Chris: (10:39): "This Oscar is gong home in a Honda Civic. This Oscar is the nicest thing they ever own in their life." Louis CK killing it!
Chris: (10:37): I think the Sylvester Stallone train ran out of steam when #Oscars voters remembered Judge Dredd, Rhinestone, Oscar, Over the Top, etc. etc.
Chris: (10:32): Wow. Big surprise. I thought Mark Rylance was terrific. The role was written to give him great little moments.
Chris: (10:12): "Fifty Shades of Grey" -- Oscar nominee. Just keep repeating that to yourself. Meanwhile... zippo for #TheEndoftheTour #MrHolmes etc.
Chris: (10:12): I still say it was a weak year for animation, in an otherwise outstanding film year. "Inside Out" was 2nd best of the bunch.
Chris: (10:10): So happy for "Bear Story." Absolutely amazing film. Poignant, political, heartfelt. Hope to see a feature from this gang.
Chris: (10:08): Of animated shorts, "Prologue" was just the weirdest inclusion. Naked dudes stabbing each other up the bunghole.
Chris: (9:58): Bit of a surprise for "Ex Machina" in Visual Effects. Good solid work. Chances of #MadMaxFuryRoad topping Cabaret looking narrower.
Chris: (9:53): What's the tally for #MadMaxFuryRoad now? Six wins is it? Only loss was cinematography.
Chris: (9:47): Enjoying these sly #Oscars commercials in which white actors lip synch acceptance speeches by black winners.
Chris: (9:38): Not a coincidence that top two contenders for cinematography used minimal CGI in favor of practical photography and effects.
Chris: (9:32): Answering my own question (with Google's help: "Cabaret" won 8 Oscars but lost to "The Godfather."
Chris: (9:27): Anyone know what record is for most Oscar wins without taking Best Picture? I think we're going to set a new one tonight.
Chris: (9:22): Probably the thing I love most about George Miller is that he totally looks like a villain from one of his movies.
Chris: (9:21): "Mad Max: Fury Road" expected to make sort of run in the "technical" categories tonight usually reserved for presumptive Best Pic winner.
Chris: (9:13): Alicia Vikander wins an Oscar. Alternate headline: Alicia Vikander's no-nudity clause for all future roles is now in effect.
Chris: (9:11): Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander competing in the REAL contest: Most shamelessly misplaced lead acting performance.
Chris: (9:04): The problem with the Stacey Dash gag is that, even in Hollywood, people were saying, "Remind me who Stacey Dash is again?"
Chris: (8:59): Glad they got Jeff Daniels for the spoof clip of "The Martian," but why is he playing his Dumb & Dumber role?
Chris: (8:54): A reminder: "The Revenant" was not nominated for screenplay. Only 7 films have won Best Picture w/o one. Only 3 in last 70 years,
Chris: (8:51): A lot of prognosticators are saying "The Big Short" is going to win big tonight. I wish that were so, but this is a good start.
Chris: (8:47): First win of the night for #Spotlight. Also possibly the last win of the night for Spotlight. I hope not.
Chris: (8:45): Screenplay awards first! I love it!
Chris: (8:42): It's about opportunities. "Leo gets good parts every year." Yes!
Chris: (8:37): "Because we had real things to protest at the time! When you're being raped and lynched, it's hard to care about who won best cinematography."
Chris: (8:30): I'm soooo excited to see how Chris Rock handles the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Was there ever a man better married to a moment
