Pixels
I wholeheartedly agree with the original Film Yap review of Pixels written by Joe Shearer, so I’m not trying to beat a dead horse (or large, pixelated ape in this case). Allow me to reiterate some points about the DVD / Blu-ray release of Sony’s "Pixels."
Adam Sandler is either hit or miss with his films, and I never know what I’m getting myself into prior to watching one. There are a few surprises in films like “Click” and last year’s “Blended,” but most of the time when I see a Happy Madison Production, I proceed cautiously. Sandler has let me down time and time again, and I often try to relive the glory days when I fell in love with his humor in “Happy Gilmore” and “Billy Madison” (from which his production company’s name originated).
"Pixels" falls short of that high standard, but there are several laugh-out-loud moments to be found in this film between Sandler, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage (I'm sorry, but Kevin James has never really been that funny to me). I watched the film with my 5-year-old son ,who remained engaged for the duration of the film. My son does not stay up for any film, so although this is not a testament to good filmmaking, it does serve as proof that the movie is paced well enough for adults and children alike.
Additionally, this release comes packed full of features for anyone interested in learning more about how these video game characters came to life. With featurettes on "Space Invaders," "Pac-Man," "Donkey Kong," "Centipede" and "Galaga," you are sure to be entertained. "Pixels" runs approximately 106 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive comments.
