Supernatural: Season 8
After finishing the eighth season of “Supernatural,” it’s apparent that these wayward sons have been carrying on way too long and it may be time to hang up the old shotguns for good.
“Supernatural” is the continuing story of Sam and Dean Winchester, sibling monster hunters trying to keep the world out of the proverbial toilet. Thankfully for the boys, the Leviathan threat has ended, but unfortunately for these boys, other threats have never been greater. Dean’s miraculous return from Purgatory unsettles his relationship with his brother, and Sam is constantly haunted by his “last-chance” romance with a woman where he finally found a normal life. Now the brothers must put their differences aside to acquire a Divine Tablet that could close the Gates of Hell…forever.
Season Eight is a definite sign that the creators are grasping at ideas to keep this show going. So far through the series, we’ve seen Dean go to hell and return, Sam go to hell and return and Dean go to Purgatory and you guessed it, return safe and sound. I’ve been a huge fan of this show since the beginning, but once the show surpassed its planned ending, my interest has continued to wane. The show has quickly become redundant in its storytelling, and I’m hoping it’s time to pull the life support. The good news is that the normal life expectancy of a popular CW show is roughly 10 years, so it seems there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel.
Don’t get me wrong; season 8 has many fantastic episodes. “Hunteri Heroici” is a hilariously dark episode where citizens of a small town are killed in very cartoonish ways. “Torn and Frayed” is a very tragic episode. Even though I’ve become annoyed with the redundancy of a brother pining for a happy life, it still tugs at my heartstrings every time.
If you’re a fan of “Supernatural,” it’s probably a given that you’ll be snatching this season up for your collection, but I just suggest waiting until it goes on sale. There’s definitely no rush. Once again, the special features don't amount to much. There are a few behind-the-scenes featurettes, a gag reel and a few deleted scenes.
