The Other Woman (2014)
“The Other Woman” is a mindless, predictable film with enough slapstick and physical humor to make it fairly enjoyable — that is, of course, if you’re able to make it past the first 20 minutes of boredom.
Cameron Diaz plays Carly Whitten, a New York City attorney who appears to have found the perfect man, Mark King (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from “Game of Thrones”). The movie opens with an unnecessarily long montage that shows Carly falling for Mark, the romantic, rich, lady-charmer. This romance is just an illusion because, as Carly soon finds out, Mark is a married man.
Mark’s wife, Kate King, is played wonderfully by Leslie Mann. Mann’s performance is what makes this movie. There is a scene in the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” where Mann plays a drunken date opposite Steve Carell. “The Other Woman” gives Mann the opportunity to reprise such a role, as she spends a majority of this movie either drinking or saying something funny. This works well, as most of the other dialogue comes across as cliché and predictable.
When Kate finds out about the affair, she comes to Carly’s door, as she is the only person who will tolerate her annoying character. The relationship between Kate and Carly reminded me of the relationship between Matthew Broderick and Jim Carrey in “The Cable Guy” (a movie which, coincidentally enough, also features Mann). There is also a scene where Mann’s character lurks in the peephole as Diaz’s character looks on in horror (mirroring a scene in “The Cable Guy”).
Kate and Carly combine wits and decide to seek revenge on Mark only to find out there is a third woman in the picture: Amber. Kate Upton plays this “dumb” blonde who joins the trio and helps them exact their vengeance through a series of gags and buffoonery. Some of the toiler humor, I’m not ashamed to admit, is laugh-out-loud funny.
There is enough in this movie to satisfy both males and females alike, so if you don’t go and see this one in the theater, it is definitely worth a rental.
