Workaholics: Seasons 1 & 2
Currently airing on Comedy Central, "Workaholics" garnered enough attention with its breakthrough pilot season to keep the laugh train rolling into its third season. The oxymoronic title refers to three best-friend slackers and the juggling act that is their lives, working 9-5 all the while trying to maintain functioning alcoholic status.
Unlike most improv comedies of its kind, the lead characters in "Workaholics" double as the writers and creators of the show as well. Blake, Adam and Anders are college best friends who share a house and a cubicle. Their transition into adulthood is the main focus of the show, but going out of their way to avoid said adulthood is the real backbone of the series. Season one was a mere 10 episodes, but had the wit and comedic timing of any seasoned comedy.
The pilot episode basically encapsulates the mantra of the entire show, finding the best friends trying to beat a drug test at work after a long weekend of partying. Other gems from season one include "The Strike," in which the boys celebrate half-Christmas and go on strike from work and "To Friend a Predator," in which Anders and company befriend a Justin Bieber fan who turns out to be a local child molester.
As short-lived as the first season was, season two comes right out of the gates where season one left off. With the instant popularity that the pilot season garnered, it's to no surprise that the show was picked up for 10 more episodes. Season two explores the same over-the-top scenarios but with more character development of recurring secondary characters Karl, Alice and Jillian. While still outlandish in its conception, the show in and of itself is an encapsulation of the struggling post-grad in his mid-20s. Simply put, "Workaholics" is as hilarious as it is relevant to its target demographic.
If you have yet to catch up on the first two seasons, you're in luck because both seasons are included in this Blu-ray release. That's right, all 20 episodes are included on two discs in the same collection. Season three just got underway, so this is the perfect time to catch up and join the proverbial party. Also included as part of the combo pack is a commentary featuring all three stars, but with a twist. Aptly dubbed "drunkmentary," the trio watches each season episode by episode in one sitting whilst throwing back beer after beer. There's also a bloopers reel, a behind the scenes featurette and cast interviews. It truly is an all-inclusive package and everything you need to get caught up to season three. So crack a few beers, gather round your slacker buddies and enjoy the funniest show currently on television. For fans of "Party Down" and "Eastbound and Down."
