“Man on a Ledge” taught me that I should never judge a movie by its title because I could miss out on something great. Despite its simple, borderline moronic title, I gave this film a look-see and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) is an innocent man willing to do anything to prove that fact. After losing two years of his life for swiping a diamond (from a character played by Ed Harris) that he didn’t steal, Nick breaks out of prison and begins a last-ditch effort to clear his name. With the help of his brother, Joey (Jamie Bell), and Joey’s girlfriend (Genesis Rodriguez), Nick sets out to steal the diamond he never stole to prove that he didn’t steal it. OK, I know it’s getting a little confusing, but trust me: It’s awesome.
There are so many good points to this movie I’m just not sure where I should begin, so I guess I’ll start with my favorite part of the movie; Elizabeth Banks. I know that it may seem that I have a bias for her because I harbor a slight crush on her, but she is great in this movie. I feel that she sometimes she only gets the opportunity to tickle our funny bones and while that’s always a pleasure, I love it when she gets to take on such a different role. Granted her character is a bit cookie-cutter, but she brings a charisma to the character.
OK, I’ve gone on quite enough about Ms. Banks. I must give all credit where it is due. Sam Worthington is great as Cassidy. He makes his character someone with whom we can empathize. Worthington made such a likable character that it made me hate Harris’ character that much more. Harris, by the way, is top-notch. I couldn’t help but want to punch his character right in the face by the end of the movie.
I could go on and on about the acting but I must commence with my review. The story itself is chock full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. It’s hard to talk too much about specifics without risking spoilers, so all I can really say is go out and get this movie and watch for yourselves. “Man on a Ledge” is what good movies are about.
The Blu-ray offers a beautiful 1080p picture, which makes all of the scenes on the ledge that much more thrilling. The special features are slim, limited to a short featurette and a trailer with commentary by Elizabeth Banks. SCORE!
Don’t let the title scare you away from giving “Man on a Ledge” a chance. I can promise you that you won’t regret it.
