Puss in Boots
Shrek’s feisty feline steps into the spotlight for his very own adventure in “Puss in Boots.” While his backstory wasn’t a necessary one, it is quite enjoyable nonetheless.
The story begins with Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) taking a job to steal magic beans from the ruthless outlaws Jack and Jill. Unfortunately, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) beats Puss to the punch. The plot thickens as Puss finds out that Kitty works for a friend from his past, Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). The three cohorts set out to recover the golden goose of legend, but Puss quickly realizes that Humpty may be a rotten egg.
The tone of “Puss in Boots” is very much keeping with the "Shrek" series, and Puss is the most deserving character of Shrek’s bevy of sidekicks to get the spotlight. I mean, who would really want to watch an hour-and-a-half of Donkey talking to himself?
The cast seems to have a lot of fun with its characters. Banderas seems to have the most fun as Puss. He oozes charm through his voice, while Salma Hayek does well with Kitty Softpaws. Galifianakis steps out of his “Hangover” comfort zone and plays a bit more of an egghead. Sorry, that joke was horrible.
“Puss in Boots” shines not only through its writing and characters but the beautiful 1080p picture. With a movie as colorful as this, I would definitely recommend picking up the Blu-ray over the DVD. It also comes with a "litter" of special features. There’s the Animator’s Corner, Puss’ Paw-Pouncing Challenge, Glitter Box Dance Off and a few deleted scenes.
If you’re a parent, or even if you’re not, I would definitely recommend you get your paws on “Puss in Boots” before it disappears.
