Gene Hackman and Melvyn Douglas both give powerful, Oscar-nominated performances in this quietly brutal portrait of a fractured father-son relationship.
Very good breakdown of a relatively neglected, forgotten, overlooked -- I'm not sure of the right word -- movie. I need to rewatch it myself. Love costs, it doesn't come free, and the loved ones should acknowledge that at least once in a while, is what I remember the movie saying to me when it came out. Subtle, lovely writing. I like Hackman's Popeye Doyle, but I'll take this performance over that one any day. It may be Hackman's best. Douglas and Parsons also fine. Rich, actor-friendly, writing. It's great that you reached back for a look at this deserving picture. I hope it continues to be rediscovered.
