"Despite being a sex worker Yo-Yo is easily the movie’s smartest character. She’s has hopes, dreams and goals and kinda plays like a hood Nancy Drew (Nancy Dru Hill?)."
The implication that sex workers are of lower intelligence followed by the description of a Black character as the "hood" version of a white character is troubling.
First off, thanks for reading! I wasn't intending to imply that sex workers aren't capable of being intelligent - tons of movies and mainstream society as a whole do that for me, which is part of what makes Yo-Yo such a refreshing and interesting character. In regards to the "hood Nancy Drew" business, I believe this is a direct quote from the film. I'm just working with the text I'm given. Sorry if I offended ... it certainly wasn't my intention. Have a good weekend.
I saw this some time ago-- May 2021-- as part of a test audience. It seemed pretty much complete at that point, and I wonder how much it has changed since then, if at all. My recollection is that I enjoyed it quite a bit, but felt the last 30 minutes was unneeded. Had it ended when Boyega's character gets home and tells Yoyo that he's all like whatever about it, it would have been a great movie. Again, who knows what they've rewritten, reshot, or otherwise altered in the 2+ years since I saw it, so if that made no sense, you know why. I'm down to watch this again and see the finished product.
